Satisfying the Hard to Please:
One of his “toughest customers” once went back for fourths.
Conquering Comfort Food:
Many team members are from Vermont and take their homemade mac ’n cheese seriously. He’s mastered the authentic recipe – Cabot cheddar and all.
Unofficial Sous Chef:
Lara Mirra, wife of SPRT driver Dave Mirra.
Made-from-scratch commemorative cakes for team members’ birthdays or a big win. Whenever the team is in the Ozarks, Alburger gets team favorites from the Missouri Hick barbecue restaurant in Cuba, Missouri.
On-the-Road Records Held:
- Breaks down a kitchen in 20 minutes.
- Once cooked for 54. By himself.
- Bobbing for apples. (That’s a whole ’nother story.)
Preps 20 percent of his meals at home. Always has two to three backup meals planned.
Serving up for 2013 Season:
Venison roast with carrots, potatoes, and onions. Turkey on the grill. Scalloped potatoes. Meatloaf (moms everywhere, look out).
End Goal, Every Meal:
For each team member to feel as if he’s cooking just for him.
Alburger didn’t simply want to cook – he wanted to take on coordination and logistics, travel extensively, and be – literally – a vital part of a team.
Most Challenging Trip:
Tall Pines Rally, Ontario: It was so cold, the motor home’s water lines froze. Washing up took place at a nearby nursing home, which luckily had a professional-grade kitchen.
