First Application: New 2.0-liter Twin-Scroll Direct Injection SUBARU BOXER Engine

The new styling of the 2014 Forester 2.0XT makes a bold statement, and what’s under the hood backs it up – a turbocharged variant of the FA-Series SUBARU BOXER engine that was introduced in the BRZ.

Debuting on Forester 2.0XT models, this 2.0-liter, 250-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine uses a combination of direct fuel injection – the first application in a Subaru engine – along with high compression, Subaru Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS), and turbo-charging with an intercooler to achieve high performance and high efficiency. In fact, this new engine delivers fuel efficiency that’s on par with 2WD vehicles in the same class and the best among AWD vehicles.

Also making its way into this engine is twin-scroll technology. A twin-scroll turbo has two exhaust gas inlets and two nozzles – a smaller, more sharply angled one for quick response, and a larger, less angled one for peak performance.

In twin-scroll designs, the exhaust manifold physically separates the channels for cylinders that can interfere with each other, so the pulsating exhaust gases flow through separate spirals, or scrolls. The result? Decreased exhaust emissions along with significantly reduced turbo lag upon acceleration – altogether quicker response.

Also new to the turbo models is underhood intercooler ducting. Subaru replaced the hood scoop that supplied cool air to the intercooler by ducting mounted under the hood. This helps enhance forward visibility and maintains the clean, uninterrupted lines of the sheet metal.
