The Forester XT transmission is a beefed-up Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). It uses stronger, specially engineered steel links to handle the 2.0-liter turbo’s higher torque. XT models feature standard paddle shift controls.
A new level of driver control comes to 2.0XT models in the form of advanced Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE), which was designed to sharpen the already impressive response of Forester. This engine performance management system allows the driver to tailor the vehicle’s driving characteristics to his or her preferences by choosing from among three selectable modes – Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp – using a switch on the steering wheel.
Here’s how it works: With Intelligent mode selected, SI-DRIVE provides a more relaxed throttle response curve, making it useful for commuting in stop-and-go traffic. It also accesses a 6-speed manual mode for the CVT, using steering wheel paddle shift control switches.
Sport mode provides quick throttle responses and powerful, linear acceleration. The 6-speed manual mode is available.
In Sport Sharp mode, SI-DRIVE modifies the engine’s electronic throttle programming to deliver even quicker throttle response. It includes programming for an 8-speed manual mode, for even sportier driving.
On all 2.0XT models (as well as Forester 2.5i Limited and Touring), a new X-MODE feature integrates related inputs on a high level to enable navigation of demanding driving conditions – underdeveloped roads, slippery pavement, steep hills and trails, and more. X-MODE marshals the capabilities of engine performance, transmission ratio selection, ABS, and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability control.
At the push of the X-MODE control switch mounted on the front center console, the driver experiences improved control. The system optimizes engine output and transmission ratio, increases the engagement of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and utilizes VDC to reduce individual wheelspin.
What’s more, new Hill Descent Control helps to maintain a constant speed when the vehicle is traveling downhill, further enhancing the driver’s sense of security.
