12/16/2016 Version 13.3 About the Author The All-New 2017 Impreza Sport: Built to Thrill Written by Jen Miller 12/16/2016 Version 13.3 Step inside the sleek, amped-up Impreza Sport. It’s an agile vehicle, strong but athletic, and fun to drive. The all-new 2017 Impreza Sport is an intensified ride from the wheels up. In addition to an array of other performance-boosting and design enhancements, the new Sport features 18-inch alloy wheels, Active Torque Vectoring and a sport-tuned suspension. The result? An engaging ride with exceptional cornering instincts, razor-sharp response and remarkable agility. Under the hood is an FB 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection SUBARU BOXER engine with 152 horsepower. “It has a very quick steering ratio,” says Todd Hill, car line manager for Subaru of America, Inc. “The vehicle feels more connected and responsive when you drive it. It’s an agile vehicle, strong but athletic, and fun to drive.” The Sport not only corners well, it expresses a sleek new design language. First, the 2017 Impreza sits on a longer wheelbase, giving the vehicle an aerodynamic stance and a roomier cabin. Second, this muscular attitude is supported in the exterior design by an all-new character line in the doors, fender flares and a deep roof line. Standard LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), a black-finish front grille and body-color rocker panels up the athletic ante. Finally, the interior boasts black sport cloth upholstery trimmed with signature red stitching, a motif carried through in the steering wheel, CVT shifter boot, dash panel and door trim. The new platform achieves major advances in driving pleasure, agility, crash protection and ride comfort. The modular chassis includes a new framework with optimized cross sections and highly stiffened joints between structures to enhance straight-line stability while suppressing noise, vibration and harshness. “It takes huge steps in how stiff the structure is, which translates into a quieter car with better ride and handling,” says Hill. In addition to lowering the car’s center of gravity, the new platform has 70 to 100 percent greater rigidity than current models. This doesn’t just support performance, but also safety, translating to a 40 percent increase in impact energy absorption. 1. Power moonroof available 2. What’s New LED Steering Responsive Headlights The system pivots the headlight beams left and right according to the steering wheel angle, improving visibility at night. Suspension The front struts are larger, and the dampening force and shock valve proportioning have been modified on the front struts and rear shock absorbers, providing improved low-speed handling performance and high-speed ride comfort. Active Torque Vectoring Designed to help enhance handling performance when cornering, the system monitors steering angle, accelerator, lateral g-force and yaw. When understeer is detected, the system applies brake pressure to the inside front wheel, reducing understeer and improving stability. Active Grille Shutter The front bumper incorporates a shutter that electrically opens and closes depending on vehicle speed to help improve fuel efficiency. 1.
