Subaru Road Racing Team
From the start, members of SRRT recognized that the 2010 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season would be one for sorting out and developing their new #35 WRX STI. The car has proven competitive, as witnessed by times that consistently topped the charts during practices at Barber Motorsports Park (Birmingham, Alabama). Drivers Bret Spaude and Andrew Aquilante have been able to move up in position during most of the events.
SRRT has worked through technical engine issues that plagued the team in the first few races, and it had some bad luck during the events along the way. On-track accidents moved #35 from 5th to 9th in the Barber race and ended the day early for the team at VIRginia International Raceway (Alton, Virginia). But the WRX STI has proven rugged as seen by its bouncing through the inside of Barber's turn 9 after contact and continuing.
The #35 WRX STI had its best finish to date – 5th – at Lime Rock Park, having moved up in the standings as far as 2nd during the race. However, the team experienced innumerable problems at Watkins Glen International and only finished a few laps. Round 7 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was better, with the car finishing the race in 13th.
Development issues seemed to have been sorted out as SRRT headed into the last three rounds of the season.
Keep up with both Subaru Motorsports teams in the Editor's Track Journal.
