The road racing team built a new race car for 2011 – a 2011 WRX STI Sedan – which replaced the #35 WRX STI 5-door that the team fielded for the 2010 season. Read about its development in Version 8.1’s cover story, “Preparation of a Road Racer.”
The season began well, with SRRT placing 13th in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race in Daytona at the end of January. However, niggling issues prevented the team from finishing races at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Barber Motorsports Park.
SRRT took its second #35 Sedan to VIRginia International Raceway in May. With the car’s developing electronics, it ran well at VIR, qualifying 4th and finishing the race in 11th place.
For Round 5 at Lime Rock Park at the end of May, SRRT started from the front row (2nd in qualifying). SRRT #35 challenged for the lead several times and finished 11th due to contact that required pit stops. At Watkins Glen for Round 6, an equipment change caused the team to start from the back of the GS Class field. The team climbed up to 18th by the end of the race.
Rounds 7, 8, and 9 will be run after this issue goes to the printer, leaving the final round at Mid-Ohio, September 16-17. Watch the Editor’s Track Journal for updates. To see the races on TV, consult www.speed.com/schedule.
