Families of Subaru
Motorsports Teams:
David Higgins and Family

The drive to rally is deeply ingrained in the Higgins family DNA. Three generations have been involved … so far.

Last November, Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins stood in the midst of the Subaru display at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show. Among the featured Subaru vehicles at the show were two bearing the name Higgins.

One was the STI that Mark Higgins had driven to break a 21-year-old record for the fastest lap of the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course in a production car (read Journal entry about the event). The other was the STI rally car that David Higgins had driven to last year’s Rally America National Championship and to break the record for the Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds Hillclimb.

David Higgins commented on their successes … and their competitiveness: “I think part of the reason my brother and I have been so successful is our desire to beat each other – to drive a little bit further than other people. Because when you beat somebody you live with, those bragging rights go a long way. If you get beat by somebody else, you don’t have to see them for a while – it’s not such a big deal. That’s why we’ve ended up being so competitive.

“When we go to a rally, the first person’s times I ever want to see are his, and he’s exactly the same way. It just drives us to be that little bit above the other guys.”
