Kyle and Kristen Mehling have participated in several 48HRS of Tristate drives. They made it to the kickoff breakfast on the first day of the 2012 edition. According to Kyle Mehling, “The brand attracts people who are enthusiastic: They enjoy their local outdoors, and they like to give back to the community. They volunteer their time and effort, whether it be animal shelters, food donations, and, in this case, the American Cancer Society. This event encompasses all those people.

“What’s fun is to meet the new people there, who haven’t done it before. When we go over how the drive is going to go, you can see the new, eager people have no idea what’s in store the next few days. Maybe it’s the first time in their lives they’ve ever seen 45 Subaru vehicles rolling into a parking lot together and taking off together. That’s an exciting sight for the new people, young or old – the camaraderie of the event.”

This was reinforced by fellow participants Justin and Beth Williams, Ray LeFever, Allisa Hiland, Jason Kainu, and Nichole Tucker. They all met on the drive four years ago and have become friends. They return each year especially to spend time together; it’s the only time they get to see each other.

People grow with this event. According to Mehling, “We’re a perfect example of that. We were a young couple when we started out, and now we have our baby with us. It’s something we wouldn’t miss. We started the third year.”
