In addition to its traditional efforts in stage rally, Subaru is making a bold stand in the Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) competition. Global sport lifestyle brand PUMA has joined forces with Subaru of America, Inc. to create the all-new Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team. The team fields three cars, driven by SRT USA stage rally and rallycross competitor Dave Mirra (Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team WRX STI #40), European Rallycross Championship champ Sverre Isachsen (#11), and champion vert skater Bucky Lasek (#81). The three-car effort will compete in all rounds of the 2012 GRC, which includes X Games 18.
The 2012 Subaru WRX STI rallycross cars boast more than 600 horsepower. The cars are built to the GRC rule set by the team’s technical partner, Vermont SportsCar. Team technicians have been extremely busy in the off-season testing and engineering further developments to their Subaru STI rallycross cars after earning a Bronze at last summer’s ESPN X Games 17 Rallycar Racing event.
Best known for his skills on a skateboard, 12-time X Games Skateboard Vert medalist Bucky Lasek began his journey into racing on a shifter kart at his local California track, Moran Raceway.
Soon thereafter, Lasek began driving training at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Consequent racing exposure includes the Skip Barber Racing and Team O’Neil Rally schools, MMRP Mustang Challenge Series, Porsche Cup races, and an intensive rally training regimen at the DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington.
Lasek expects to develop his skills with input from his more experienced teammates.
Mirra became a pro BMX rider in 1992 and holds records for winning the most total X Games medals as well as for most Gold medals. He is one of the world’s best-known action sports athletes and is credited with bringing freestyle BMX into the mainstream.
Mirra completed a test and training program with SRT USA in late 2007 and ran half of the 2008 Rally America National Championship, earning 2008 Rookie of the Year honors. He impressed everyone in his rally debut at X Games 14, where he earned a Bronze medal after beating two top North American drivers in head-to-head heats.
Competing for SRT USA, Mirra added more driving experience in the Rally America National Championship (2009-2011) and rallycross (2010-2011) to his resume. He finished 4th overall for the season in Rally America, and, while competing at summer X Games 17, he narrowly missed a podium finish. He also competed in two 2012 GRC events, garnering 4th- and 6th-place finishes.
Isachsen has been a motorsport addict all his life, starting with local autocross and rallycross events in his native Norway. He had his eyes set on a much bigger series – the European Rallycross Championship (ERC).
Isachsen made his ERC debut in 2002 and was immediately a top contender. Due to his unmatched determination, driving skills. and event tactics, he became known as the Viking Warrior. Since 2009, Isachsen has won the series every year.
With the introduction of the Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team in 2012, Isachsen has signed on to pilot the #11 Subaru WRX STI at GRC events. Look out America – the Viking Warrior has arrived!
All of these events are being held in conjunction with NASCAR and IZOD IndyCar® Series events at tracks owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. They are shown live on ESPN.
