SUBARU IN INTERNATIONAL RALLYING: 2000
EVOLVING FOR SUCCESS

Subaru Impreza WRC2000

CHANGES BEGUN WITH THE SUBARU IMPREZA WRC99 CONTINUED FOR THE WRC2000 CAR. THE SUBARU IMPREZA ENTRIES IN THE 2000 WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP MAY HAVE LOOKED LIKE THE ONES FROM THE YEAR BEFORE, BUT UNDERNEATH THEY WERE DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT.

The 1999 Subaru World Rally Team driver/co-driver lineup returned to campaign for the team in the 2000 World Rally Championship (WRC) season. Their cars were thoroughly redesigned under the sheet metal, and they proved highly competitive. Still, a season that started full of promise ended just short of the team’s ultimate goals.

Jean-Joseph/Boyère, Tour de Corse

The Subaru World Rally Team redesigned approximately 80 percent of the mechanical and electronic components in their Impreza rally cars for the 2000 season. The redesign was the result of 10 months of development in which the team examined every component for possible improvement. Changes were made in aerodynamics, engine cooling, suspension, electrical systems, and weight distribution (for a lower center of gravity).

The Subaru Impreza WRC2000 didn’t debut until the fourth round of the WRC season in Portugal. With it, Richard Burns/Robert Reid drove to victory in that round, placed second in the fifth round (Finland), and won the sixth round in Argentina.

Burns/Reid, Safari Rally

At the end of the first six rounds of the season, Burns/Reid had a strong lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Juha Kankkunen/Juha Repo also garnered championship points in five of the first seven rounds. However, a string of misfortunes and retirements in the second half of the season closed up both the WRC Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships.

Although Burns had the best WRC season of his career and won four of the 14 rounds in 2000, he finished 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship – five points behind Marcus Grönholm. Subaru was 3rd in the Manufacturers’ Championship.

For the 2001 season, the Subaru team was looking forward to campaigning the new Impreza body!

    (Africa, Acropolis, Cyprus)
  • Peter “Possum” Bourne/Craig Vincent
    (New Zealand, Australia)
