2007 SUBARU RALLY TEAM USA

2007 SUBARU RALLY TEAM USA Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT USA) once again campaigns Impreza WRX STI Open Class rally cars prepared by Vermont SportsCar in the Rally America National series. Driver/co-driver teams carry over from last year, as do the team’s winning ways.

With five of the scheduled nine rallies in the books for 2007, Ken Block/Alex Gelsomino in #43 have 60 championship points with two podium finishes, and Travis Pastrana/Christian Edstrom in #199 have 55 championship points with three podium finishes.

In addition to competing in Rally America, SRT USA has entered two World Rally Championship (WRC) rounds so far in 2007 with car #199 – Mexico and Argentina. In these events, the team runs in the Production World Rally Championship support series to the WRC. These rallies mark the start of the next step for SRT USA – to successfully compete in the Production World Rally Championship in 2008. “We need experience, and that is why we’re here,” explained Pastrana before his start in Mexico.

In 2007, the team will compete in one more WRC event (Great Britain – November 30-December 2). For up-to-date team news, standings, and other information about SRT USA, go to rally.subaru.com.

SUBARU IN INTERNATIONAL RALLYING: 2001 ASSAULTING THE CHAMPIONSHIP

IMPREZA WRC 2001

arrows WITH MECHANICALS PROVEN DURING THE 2000 WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (WRC) SEASON, THE SUBARU WORLD RALLY TEAM’S IMPREZA WRC 2001 FEATURED THE NEW IMPREZA BODY. DRIVER RICHARD BURNS AND CO-DRIVER ROBERT REID CAMPAIGNED IT ON A ROUGH ROAD TO A VICTORIOUS WRC SEASON.

Having mechanical components tested through half of the previous season, the Subaru Impreza WRC 2001’s body was new for 2001. It had four doors instead of two, and it was designed for improved aerodynamics, which included moving the rear wing further to the back of the car. In addition, the body shell benefited from increased strength and improved weight distribution, along with a lower center of gravity.

The powertrain and chassis taken from the Impreza WRC 2000 included lightweight engine design, up-to-date engine control unit, and specially designed intake and exhaust manifolds, cooling system, rear differential, and suspension geometry. Mechanical components were refined for 2001, but the foundation had been laid the year before.

Richard Burns/Robert Reid remained on the Subaru World Rally Team from the 2000 WRC season. For 2001, they were joined by Petter Solberg/Phil Mills, Markko Märtin/Michael Park, and Toshi Arai/Glenn Macneall (and Tony Sircombe for the Rally of Great Britain). Solberg/Mills were entered in all 14 WRC events, while the other two drivers/co-drivers competed in selected rallies.

Retirements plagued the Subaru effort through the first part of the season, and it looked like the Subaru World Rally Team would fall far short of its promise. Then, in the fifth round in Argentina, Burns/Reid finished 2nd – the first of four second-place finishes throughout the remainder of the season. That consistency and a 1st in New Zealand gave Burns the points he would need to take the WRC Drivers’ Championship in the final event in Great Britain.

Four drivers entered the final rally with the mathematical possibility of winning the championship – Carlos Sainz, Tommi Mäkinen, Colin McRae, and Richard Burns. The other three retired from the rally, and Burns/Reid finished 3rd. In the end, the top three drivers were Burns with 44 championship points, McRae with 42, and Mäkinen with 41.

Another Subaru driver/co-driver team with a top-10 finish during the 2001 WRC season was: Rory Green/Orson Taylor (Africa).

With Richard Burns moving to Peugeot for the 2002 WRC, Petter Solberg would be teaming up with Tommi Mäkinen to campaign for another title!
