20 YEARS OF LEGACY SEDAN

20 YEARS OF LEGACY SEDAN The Subaru Legacy series was introduced in 1989, so 2009 celebrates its 20th anniversary. The Legacy sedan is manufactured in Gunma, Japan, and at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana. As of November 2008, global production of the four generations of Legacy has exceeded 3.6 million units.

Marking Legacy sedan’s 20th anniversary at the North American International Auto Show was SIA’s Job 1 Legacy. On September 11, 1989, it was the first Legacy driven off SIA’s assembly line. Read more about the 20 years of Legacy in the Spring issue of Drive (mailing the first week of April 2009).

arrows ON JANUARY 11, 2009, SUBARU INTRODUCED THE LEGACY CONCEPT AT THE NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW (NAIAS) IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN. NOT ONLY DOES THE LEGACY CONCEPT SHOWCASE THE DIRECTION OF FUTURE SUBARU DESIGN, IT ALSO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF THE LEGACY SEDAN.

In a press release about the Legacy Concept sent in mid-December 2008, Subaru of America, Inc. publicized the car’s introduction. Along with a front view of the Concept, the release cited its exterior sportiness and modern interior.

But the Concept proved to be more than that.

arrows “ULTIMATE” EXTERIOR

Legacy ConceptThe car is dazzling. Its paint strikes the first impression. The high-luster “Ultimate Silver” color makes the car look like it’s covered with mercury. That leads the eye to its lines and curves – especially to the pronounced, powerful wheel arches.

Contemporary lighting assemblies add to the vehicle’s powerful presence. These include the front end’s dual, vertical-row, multiple LED lamps. Under the bumper, fog lamps are set along the edges of the air intakes at both sides. Other exciting features are the Side Rear Vision Cameras replacing the exterior rearview mirrors.

The four-passenger interior features seats upholstered in Pearl White leather with a blue sheen and door trim of Black metallic leather. The Concept’s sportiness is reflected by the design of the steering wheel and shift lever.

In addition, instrumentation and lighting have blue accents that complement the Ultimate Silver exterior. The controls and monitor in the center console and the monitor for the Side Rear Vision Cameras enhance the vehicle’s contemporary feel.

arrows STILL TRUE TO TRADITION

Legacy Concept
The 20 years of the Legacy sedan have helped Subaru establish a tradition of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer engine technology. The Legacy Concept builds on that tradition, with emphasis on a powerful road presence.
